Installing Illustrator Brushes is very easy, first, download the brush set and place it on your computer where you’ll remember where it is. Once you’ve downloaded the file go to the location where the Illustrator program files are stored.
The default location on a Windows operating System is C:/program files/adobe/adobe illustrator/presets/en_GB/brushes. The Mac uses the following path, User\ appData\roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator\CSS Settings\en-GB\Brushes. Once the brushes folder is open drag the downloaded ai Illustrator brush file into it, closing all folders after.
Open Illustrator and create a new empty document, then open the brushes palette if not already open. To load the brushes palette on a Windows OS, press F5 or if you prefer, go to the top menu in Illustrator and click Window/Brushes. Make sure you have the brushes tab highlighted by clicking on it. (you might see some default brushes appear as you do). Select the small icon to the top right of the palette. (See diagram Below No1). At the bottom there is an option to “Open Brush library” Roll the mouse over (See diagram below No2.) and a submenu with a list of pre installed brushes will appear.
Pick the one you downloaded. All will appear in the brush library. (as seen below). you can see in the image, there are a number of tabs showing. Each one represents a different brush file. Clicking on the individual brushes adds them to the main documents brush palette where they can be modified in a variety of ways.
REMEMBER… You have both the Documents Brush Palette and the Brush Library. Once you have selected (clicked on) the brushes in the Brushes library, they become available in the main document brush palette where they can be edited.
Further options are available by double clicking on individual brushes.(see Below)
